The content is OK, I am not judging the Lonely Planet here.I bought the Kindle edition and first, the Android kindle app charged me $22 for it when amazon's web site lists is at $11. Maybe a but but a very unfortunate one.The real problem is that the Kindle edition is a complete piece of crap, and most of the blame lies with the Kindle app (Android). First hyperlinks do not work (!). Yes, you read this right. When you follow a hyperlink, the "back" button kicks you out of the book and into your library.Second, the search function is useless. You search for a city and it gives you all occurrences of that string in the book, not the entry for that city. Now if you try to go through all the occurrences to see which one is the right one, you are out of luck because again, the back button does not wor (!!!). You pick the first match, follow it to see what is on that page, it's not what you wanted, you back and the book is closed. If you think that the guide would have at least an entry in the Table of contents for top cities, wrong again, only top islands. So the only way to find "Bandung" is to turn pages and turn pages, and turn pages until you get there.Did I mention that pictures are included at a woefully inadequate low resolution ?

A big disappointment for someone who has used many Lonely Planet books in the past. Scant on travel info and even that is out of date. The only relevant info is background info which can be found on Wikipedia. Wasn't worth the money or the weight to carry it. Lonely Planet books were once a travel essential but they have made themselves irrelevant by not bothering to do the research me essays to produce a useful guide book.

The guide is surprisingly thin so it's easy to carry around, information is obviously not current but still useful, maps could be better but I don't think there is much use in criticizing a guidebook that has long since been updated so I will only add that, happily, the tour guide of the Palace of the Parliament, at least during my visit, was a nice, helpful, young lady and not (from the text, what I imagine was the case) some grumpy, jaded government employee.

This book is getting out of date--if my trip had been just a few months later I would have been able to buy the new edition. But it was still useful and included plenty of information about the towns and cities I visited in West Java for three weeks. For Jakarta, it is best to complement this book with a guidebook specific to Jakarta, also available on Amazon. As usual, I used the guidebook mostly for points of interest and information on how to get around; I found it better to use the internet to choose hotels.

The book clearly needs updating with respect to hours of operation, though, as almost always with Lonely Planet guides, the quality is pretty good for the adventuresome traveler. I just got back from a 2 week Rick Steves tour of Bulgaria and pretty much thumbed through the entire Bulgaria section.

As with all LP guides, this is very helpful but it's a mistake to try to do all of Indonesia in one book. It's just too big and varied of a country. Should be done in smaller segments.

People seem unimpressed by the lonely planet books for indonesia. Or for all indonesian guide books really. My sense is that this is largely due to over-reliance on them. Particularly in a country with almost 300 million people, 15,000 plus islands, and a lot of territory which has only recently been explored for the first time (in Papua), I'm not sure how encyclopedic we want/can expect such a book to be.Without preaching about the place of guidebooks however, I can say that for our trips within Java and Sumatra, this book did its job. It recommended a wonderful island and bungalow (Casa Nemo) on the northern tip of Sumatra (Pulau Weh), had maps when we needed them, and gave decent advice on food. Most importantly, its information on transportation was accurate. Beyond that, one can always figure things out for oneself, but missing a ferry or train or bus because of false information would defeat the point of such a book. This never happened to us.I'm giving 4 stars because some of the restaurants listed were either not there or not particularly interesting. Its also a bit too pricey. But charting Indonesia in a guidebook is an impossible task, which this book takes on rather valiantly.

Good reference material especially since very little has been written about Indonesia travel wise, glad I purchased it.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
