About the Author

Neil H. Leash has lived a life filled with broad and varied experiences that uniquely qualify him to compile this particular work and commentary. He has served in a multitude of Church assignments, including callings as a Bishop on two occasions, and as a counselor in a Stake Presidency, service as a High Council member for decades, and as an Elders Quorum President, Seminary teacher, and in numerous other stake and ward auxiliary positions. In each of these callings he has had the responsibility to study and apply the teachings of the Prophets, including those related to food storage and personal and family preparedness. Brother Leash received his Bachelor s and Master s degrees from California State University, Sacramento, and retired in 1993 after 34 years as a Supervising Probation Officer. Born and raised in Oakland, California, he was called at the age of 19 to serve as a missionary in the Eastern States Mission. Upon his return he served as an Army Medic during the Korean War, and shortly before discharge he married Velma D. Carraway in the Mesa Arizona temple. They are the parents of three children and reside in San Andreas, California.

I just got this book a few weeks ago (its summer time and I have small children) And I finished in 2 weeks (that is fast) and I loved it so much that a few people in my Ward are going out to buy it. (including our self reliance specialist). Why I liked it - I was raised in the church and where I lived most people did not have a full years supply for every member of the family. (there wasn't a lot of room in most peoples houses for a full year supply for each family member) It was never something that I truly understood the importance of. I have been trying for years to figure out how to do food storage for my family. But never really had the drive. This books gives quotes and story's since the church began. It helped me to understand how simple it is. Since reading this book (I am currently reading it a second time - this time with highlighter - pen and scripture markers) I have developed a plan and started implementing our food storage. It will take time, but with the direction, put together in good format from many Prophets - I KNOW I can do it this time. Because I understand so much more about Food storage and why. I highly recommend this book for everyone. I am so thankful I found it.Action I have taken in a few weeks ... I bought my first 5 gal bucket of wheat and ground my own flour for the first time - YUMMMM! I am writing down the meals we eat - listing the cookbook and page I found it in and the listing the ingredients in a few different columns Fresh, 3 months, 1 year, and long term. Then after I have about 3 months writing down, I will figure out how to make these recipes work with food storage. Then I will know what we eat the most off and start there buying more for that years supply.About Vegan - we "eat meat sparingly" Mostly we will eat meat when we go out, but at home I cook a whole foods plant based diet. We are so much healthier then we were 1 year ago. I was worried that food storage would be harder for our family because of this fact. After writing up the charts mentioned above ... I found that most ingredients we use on a regular basis are either fresh or have a shelf life of a year at least. So the only thing I need to work out is fruits and veggies - looking into freeze dried veggies and dried fruits. I make a lot of the food we eat from scratch, it healthier and fits right into food storage - foods.So even if you have a special diet - YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! Don't be discouraged. Read this book and then just go for it!!

This book is amazing and very powerful. It's not overwhelming but it does open you eyes as to what the different prophets and general authorities have said over the ages and having it all in one book makes it easy to follow. It answers so many questions: "Should we share our food storage with others?", "What should we store?", "Why?", etc...It covers topics such as the preparedness responsibilities of local church leaders and what our own individual responsibilities are. "The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare as boarding the ark was to the people of Noah." ~President Ezra taft BensonA definate must have in every family's home, LDS or not.
