As much as loved Faith Martin's Hillary Green series I held back on reading this series due to the phony sounding stripper name of Trudy Lovejoy. That name was a deal breaker. But since I had finished the entire Hillary Green series I decided to give the books a try. Not as good as the Hillary series but I enjoy Dr Ryder's wisdom and compassion. When I read a Hilly book it's hard for me to put down, but with this series I find myself putting it down constantly. I'll give Faith Martin kudos for not making the two series copies of each other. I do not feel like I'm reading a Hillary book with only the names changed.

I was a huge fan of Faith Martin's DI Hillary Greene series, so when I saw a new series from her, I was excited to read it. It's in a slightly different vein—still in Oxford, still involving elements of the police—but this is set in 1960, with two main characters: Dr. Clement Ryder, a coroner suffering from Parkinson's, and Trudy Loveday, a nineteen-year-old probationary constable. The world they live in isn't interested in accommodating physical impairments like Parkinson's, and it's not interested in treating women fairly. But the coroner and the officer soon find themselves paired to investigate open cases. A Fatal Mistake is the second book in this series, and I found it a more interesting and engaging read than the first—which I liked quite a bit. The books are a little more leisurely-paced than many of today's mystery-thrillers, but I still turned those pages and stayed up too late reading.Martin paints the two main characters very well, as well as their motivations and aspirations. They're fully-fleshed out characters, and I enjoy rooting for both of them. Sometimes, their misunderstandings can be almost Shakespearian (or Three's Companyian) but it doesn't detract from either the characters or the story. Indeed, the way they work the system to their advantage is delightful. While the plots provide a decent number of red herrings, it wasn't difficult to guess the killer. But even though I knew what was coming, I was on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read the next one.

Like the last book in the series, this book centres around an intelligent, honourable coroner who is trying to hide the fact that he has Parkinson's and a young woman trying to make a career in the police at a time when women weren't expected to work as police officers. The mystery is interesting and all the clues make sense without it being predictable. The setting in 1960 in Oxford is entertaining and evocative. The rare use of humour is very well done.

Thank you so much for continuing to write great stories about believable characters. I have enjoyed your 'Murder . . .' series as well. Trudy is a wonderful character, so young and still learning. She's being well taught and led by Ryder, another interesting character. While an unlikely pair, they complement each other very well.

I've enjoyed this series including A Fatal Mistake. Interesting and compelling characters with great locales and good plots. My problem now is that there are too many editions with varying titles. I am constantly trying to figure out if I have already read the most recent book available!

I won't say I'm hooked yet but I could be. There is much to like here, starting with a satisfying and believable whodunit. But it also weaves in themes of class distinction and privilege along with the rise of women in non-traditional occupations, all without being preachy or pushing a hidden agenda. The protagonist, Trudy Loveday, is a bit brash and green, consistent with her age and experience. But she is sympathetic and one roots for her. I like the moral tone to; neither holier-than-thou nor libertine with disgust for evil perps and sympathy for victims.

I'm such a fan of Faith Martin. This second book in the series did not disappoint. I love this character, Trudy. And it's also fun to have this book set in the 60's. It brings back some memories for me. But I will never understand England, holding on to this ridiculous class system. I'd never call anyone "Lord" or "His Lordship" just because they were born into a certain family. And you get to rule an empire just because you were born into a certain family???

But....too many twinkling eyes, lots of repetitions, not my favourite Ms Martin read but still interesting and worth the read.
