Hart's enthusiastic approach energizes the texts, and both books are loaded with full-color illustrations that will surely attract readers. Kids, for the younger end of the audience range, moves quickly through the preliminaries of sketching "big-eye" characters' physical attributes, then goes on to demonstrate how to put figures in motion and, using a few successive drawings, how to create some typical characters. Kids who want detailed anime instructions will need to look elsewhere; those who just want some basics will find plenty here. I bought his for my grandson after we saw it a local art/craft supply shop for a much higher price. He likes the drawings and illustrations and is attempting to draw some of the simpler ones. Its a bit more advanced, as the shapes don't start at just a basic stage, but are a bit more complicated from the beginning steps. The book covers some aspects about shading and drawing 3D shapes in the beginning, so we'll keep at it. It's something that he can pick up and stay focused on for an hour or so right now. I'm hoping he'll grow into it and learn more about drawing action figures along the way.
This book was for my nephew and it helps inspire his imagination. He love designing robots and drawing and this book helps him alot.
I think this book is great for just starting out drawing mecha. It's to the point and a great pillar to start from. Much of what was in the book I had already figured out for myself, but seeing that someone else who has been doing this for awhile does the same thing reaffirmed for me the important starting point. I recommend this to anyone interested in drawing, sculpting, designing, or building model mecha. Great book for learning the basic mechanics and shaping of mecha. Great stuff.
Only flaw here is the end has a little bit of filler, some parts seem lacking, and it seems to explain only what is shown and not any help for your own ideas. It is a good book and only lacks a few things. so its good with little experience and for total newbies.
My art students loved this book so much that when it was stolen several years ago, they begged me to try to find another one! This artist/author is one of their favorites. Even though not all students can handle the higher skill level drawing, they still look at book for reference and ideas.
