Without a doubt, skyrocketing healthcare costs have crippled some companies out of business. Dr. Josh Luke covers the dog-eat-dog nature of healthcare costs in his book “Health - Wealth: 9 Steps To Financial Recoveryâ€. His approach is to balance the cost of healthcare while still providing excellent service and support to employees. It’s not an easy topic to cover, but with years of experience on his side, Dr. Luke offers business owners and managers some practical tips to proactively address the healthcare dilemma. Some of the tips covered include:-Offer alternative insurance models-Convert to direct primary care-Conduct an independent carrier and broker expense review-Implement disease-specific value and care management programsThese just cover the tip of the iceberg. The practical information, anecdotes, and examples provided offer some great insight as to how you can save money.Although this is very well-written, I would have liked to see some more research and a balanced approach to this subject. Dr. Luke tends to fall into a number of writing fallacies: appealing to the emotional nature of the debate, demonizing capitalism as the sole cause of the healthcare cost crisis, and generalizing all doctors as greedy, manipulative, and only concerned for money. I’m sure this is the case in many situations, but I’d like to think that some doctors aren’t as black as they’re painted in this work.Additionally, Dr. Luke doesn’t seem to pull in some peer-reviewed, credible research to support his conclusions or analysis. Many of his sources come from popular newspapers, magazines, or even Wikipedia. As a PhD, I would hope that he would urge his readers to critically consider his arguments and not just take them “as is†since he’s considered an expert in the subject. These criticisms aside, this work is a valuable resource for business owners and managers who struggle as a result of increasing healthcare costs.
I'm half way through this book, Health Wealth. Although I don't have a business, I'm finding this book helpful and informative. This is the second book by Josh Luke I have purchased (Ex-Acute in 2016) and I would recommend both. Hopefully I can attend one of his lectures soon.I just ordered another copy of the book for my nephew who owns a business and often complains about the cost of providing health care insurance for his employees. I would recommend it for the owners and managers of all sizes of businesses.
At the start of the book, the author states that "The result of you reading this book will be a healthier workforce, a happier workforce, and savings of more than 30% annually on overall healthcare spending for both you and your organization and its employees." So, right off, I was skeptical of the information that this book offered. Reading a book can give you ideas and tools to help, but doesn't automatically change actions, culture, and legislation. I did skip over Chapter One almost completely because the humble bragging turned me off of the author almost completely. An issue I found was that the bold blocks of text are long-winded, which makes them blend into the background rather than stand out (had they been more concise).I am not a business owner, but having experienced a wide variety of different insurance options from employers over the years, it was interesting to see this issues from a corporate POV. This book reads a lot more like a personal narrative of one person's experiences than that of a professional offering up research studies, empirical data, and potential solutions. That does have it's good points, because the experiences he shares are more relatable and interesting, but it also causes his suggested solutions to come off as more biased. Some of the Alternative Models the author opens up for consideration stood out to me as extremely troublesome, such as the "faith-based cost-sharing model" which relies on an unregulated religious institution to help alleviate the costs of medical care and "eliminating PTO for sick days." Most of these ideas don't actually fix the greater issues with the system, the prohibitive costs, or value-based care that he discusses. I wouldn't even call some of them band-aid fixes, because they feel more like slapping electrical tape over a wound so that it doesn't bleed out without considering the additional damages improper treatment could entail. That said, I do see some potential in ideas, such as DPC and independent brokers, which I feel could benefit the system if implemented correctly. The author doesn't really address how to implement any of these ideas unfortunately.
Health - Wealth: 9 Steps To Financial Recovery is the second book I've read on healthcare written by Dr. Josh Luke. It cannot be said that the man doesn't know what he's talking about, he definitely does. He presents the facts bluntly, something that is unquestionably necessary when talking about health and wealth. I know this is written for an audience of business owners and managers but certainly the subject matter is relevant to all Americans and I would encourage everyone to get informed. My reason for only 3 stars? This is purely a personal opinion and really has no bearing on the validity of the information Dr. Josh Luke provides in his books but I think I would quickly tire of conversations with him because they would be all about him. Yes, he's a successful man, there's no doubt about that and there are instances throughout the book where he shows himself humble but humility is not this man's strong suit. Some readers might be turned off by the brag rich tone of this author.
