As the title indicates, this is in fact “A Love Song”. For me music can be felt in your soul. It can impact you with no words at all. And like with this beautiful “Love Song”, not everything is said with words. To end one section of a book and simply turn a page, only to find yourself so emotionally impacted takes a talent that is hard to fully understand. This book does that. You will feel every emotion. Every act. Every touch. Every breath and every action. There are small gestures which read in the context of the book, mean everything. This is about darkness and light and the colors in between. This is about finding the person who helps you see though the darkness to find happiness and joy, love…to see light."Matěj treated life like delicious food, just like he appreciated Simon’s books and hummed around a beer bottle. The boy knew how to enjoy things, how to marvel at things, how to savor impressions, how to feast on a pleasurable moment to its maximum capacity. It was a singular skill, wildly to be admired. When Simon found himself at the center of the man’s attention, those were easily the happiest minutes of his entire life. When I first read “The Layover” and then “Dirty Mind” I knew Roe Horvat is an automatic one-click buy author for me. But TBH I was afraid of this book. Its title and blurb indicated it won’t be an easy read. And it wasn’t but it was so worth it!This book is not for everyone. If you’re looking for something easy and fluffy with rainbow unicorns - don't read this book. You'll be disappointed.If you’re not afraid of a gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, full of pain and anxiety love story, then read it. Read it ASAP because “A Love Song for the Sad Man in the White Coat” is a brilliant book!I don’t know how Roe did it but I was captivated from the very first page. But I wasn’t only a reader watching the whole story from the distance with my cool eyes. No, I was Simon, the sad man struggling with his life after Matej had gone, and on a downward spiral and I only could wait when he - and I - would finally fall down and crash.Yes, this book, for the most part, is angsty. Yes, Simon’s pain and depression are almost palpable but somehow it’s not too much to bear. And there IS a happy ending!The story is powerful, written in Roe’s emotional and beautiful style. It touches your heart and soul.Thank you, Roe, for writing it!

Okay, you can scrape me off the floor! I am done! I cannot say how much this book moved me. Complex, compelling, sad, happy and just earth shattering. The words! The emotion just slayed me. As with all of this author's books, I highlighted multiple passages. The writing just makes you cry, it's so good. You just have to stop and marvel at the construction of the sentences, the flow, the combination of words. "In Simon’s head, something pulled on the safety switch. Everything went dark and blurry. Turned off. Finally. After decades of constant buzzing, writhing, regrouping, and clashing, the processes in Simon’s brain limped and then halted entirely. His consciousness became a warm black cave where only a few broken words echoed around in the vast empty space. Words like more, please and yes. Time was nonexistent." "On his first night with Matěj, for only a moment, Simon experienced a pure unadulterated joy of being completely accepted by another human being—without shame, reservations, paybacks or expectations—for the very first time in his life. It was something he’d subconsciously craved since he had been the little boy who felt unloved and sinful through no fault of his own. " Two well drawn MCs whose lives intersect and together survive trauma and upheaval. This begins slowly and at times, it's quite tragic. Had to take a break for a day or so but the story is told in layers. So I only have one Roe Horvat book left that I haven't read. So please, write some more!! If this author wrote a manual for vacuum cleaners, I'd be the first one to buy it and read it.
