From the Publisher
In Constellations of Miró, Breton Paul Hammond unravels some of the mysteries of the call-and-response of these two Surrealists by reading the pictures against the poetry, the poetry against the pictures, and both against the madness of a history that none of us has left that far behind. Featured in this edition are reproductions of the complete series of Joan Miró's Constellations and a translation of André Breton's proses parallèles. Also included is André Breton's essay, "Constellations of Joan Miró," as well as documentary illustrations and photographs. "He's right behind me, he's after every last one of my ringlets, he treats me like a violin you tune, he abandons me in his maze where the lustrous agate veers!" --André Breton, from "Women Encircled by the Flight of a Bird" (1958)

I saw about 14 or 15 of Miro’s Constellation series hanging side by side in a retrospective in Houston in 1982, and they are truly breathtaking! When I saw a used copy of this book selling for next to nothing I bought it but, it was not exactly what I expected. This is more like an academic art history thesis in which Hammond provides 185 pages of background and analysis on the series, which is not without interest but, this is not a casual read. I too did not make it past the first 20 pages or so before I put it down but, I would attribute that to my interest level, and not the admirable scholarship of this author. What I like about this book is having Berton’s 1958 essay (in translation) on Miro’s Constellations and his corresponding poems, which I was not familiar with before this book. If you are looking for fine color pictures of Miro’s Constellations, this is NOT the book you want. They are reproduced here in small (ca. 3x4 in.) black and white, newsprint like photos. The catalogue “Joan Miró (A Museum of Modern Art Book)†by Carolyn Lanchner, has the whole Constellation series in color, one to a page, but for some reason which I fail to appreciate, they are tiny reproductions (ca. 4.5x 3.5 in) on large pages (12x8 in).
This is a highly readable book, and jam-packed with information and insights into Breton, as a poet, and as a man, who knew what he wanted, and what he imagined. This was a powerful collaboration between a poet and a painter, between Breton and Miro. Touching on magic, on the force and importance of analogy, on the struggles of surrealism during the years when it was considered to have passed on (proving to the contrary) and, in essence a very intriguing history of the spirit of surrealist exploration. Very much against the other review here, this is an important, and very powerful book. Highly recommended!
